River Between the Lands original pastel
The Rio Grande may define the border between West Texas and old Mexico, but the lands along its banks are cut from the same earth. A sandbar on the Rio Grande in Big Bend Ranch State Park makes you realize how insignificant borders are to nature.
On this day, the golden cane was lovely against the deep blue Texas mountains in the distance.
This sandbar is off the River Road. We hiked along the Texas banks one afternoon, amazed at the hidden pockets of life along the Big River. The cane breaks offered a colorful contrast to the blue sky and cloudy waters, so I gave them center stage, but it was the sparkling sand that I gave the most attention as I painted this Big Bend landscape.
